Kaitlyn Dever has described her approach to appearing in the second season of The Last Of Us, after being cast as a divisive figure from the original game.
Dever’s character, Abby, was a controversial topic for fans after becoming an antagonist in the game The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020.
After an encounter with protagonist Joel, many players had a volatile response toward both Abby and the creatives behind the game. The actor portraying her, Laura Bailey, received death threats which prompted the game’s director to speak out.
Naturally, the actor that took on the role in the TV series would be aware of the potential backlash, and Dever revealed her approach in an interview with ScreenRant. “Well, it’s hard not to see those things on the internet” she said.
“It’s hard not to stop myself from looking at it every once in a while, especially going into this, for sure. And I want to do this character justice and make the fans proud by bringing her to life in this kind of way”.
She continued: “My main focus was just the collaboration between (showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann), and making sure I was really getting to the core of who she is and what drives her and her emotional state; her anger and her frustration and her grief and all of that.
“I wanted to make sure that that was what I was focusing most of my energy on”.
Season two of The Last Of Us will premiere on April 13 on MAX in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK. A third season already in development. Recently, star Pedro Pascal described the second season as “fucking heartbreaking”, joking that the makers of the show were “sick people”.
