Wes Anderson’s new film, The Phoenician Scheme, has unveiled an action-packed trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

The film stars Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton as a father and daughter struggling to overcome their difficult relationship. Unusually for the director, known for quirky comedy, the trailer shown to the convention crowd featured a lot of combat. It’s the director’s first theatrical release since 2023’s Asteroid City.

The clip has not been released publicly as of yet, although The Hollywood Reporter had the following description:

“[The Trailer] opens with del Toro’s character looking bloodied and injured after surviving his sixth airplane crash”. The piece continued: “No details about the plot were shared from the stage, although much of the action involved battle scenes. ‘Help yourself to a hand grenade,” del Toro tells Scarlett Johansson’s character in one scene. She turns down the offer”.

The film is scheduled for a May 23 release in the UK, coming to the US a week later. As with most Anderson films, it features a large ensemble cast that includes Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The filmmaker is known for his repeat collaborations with actors, and this film will be no exception. Del Toro and Johansson are both returning for their second and third films respectively, while Hanks, Cranston, Wright, and Cumberbatch have all worked with the director on previous projects.

In January, Wes Anderson opened up about how long it took for the cast and crew of his 2009 animation to “trust” his process making the film. “My ideas for how to go about making the movie were probably unconventional in ways I didn’t realise,” he said, “and so I ended up doing a lot of things that made it a lot more difficult”.
