Katy Perry has reacted after another AI-generated photo of her at the Met Gala tricked fans.
It comes as the renowned Met Gala returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City over the weekend for its 2025 edition. Katy Perry was not in attendance as she is currently embarking on a world tour, but that didn’t stop some fans being convinced otherwise.
Around the time of the event, an AI-generated photo falsely showing Perry on the red carpet made the rounds on social media. The deepfake showed the singer wearing a black dress that matched the theme of ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’.
With some fans convinced that she really was on the red carpet, the pop star shared the images on social media and clarified that they were fake.
“Couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on ‘The Lifetimes Tour’ (see you in Houston tomorrow IRL),” she wrote. “P.s. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots… but I’m praying for the rest of y’all.”
The comments come as this is the second time that fans have been duped by fake images of Perry at the Met Gala. Last year, another faux image of the singer at the event circulated online and even led to her family believing that she was at the Met.
It showed her wearing a floral-inspired ballgown, aligning with the 2024 theme: ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’, and Perry soon shared a screenshot of a text from her mother, which read: “Didn’t know you went to the Met … what a gorgeous gown”.
Responding, Perry wrote: “Mom, the A.I. got you too, beware”.
The news of the deepfake follows a rocky few weeks for Perry, who faced criticism when fans mocked the lacklustre choreography seen on her aforementioned ‘Lifetimes’ tour, which kicked off in Mexico City last month.
As well as that, the singer was forced to cancel two shows in Guadalajara as the venue they were meant to take place in will not be constructed in time, and she divided opinion due to her part in the first all-female space mission in history.
The trip, organised by Jeff Bezos, sparked memes and controversy, and garnered criticism from other celebrities too. Actor Olivia Munn, for example, branded Perry “gluttonous”, Emily Ratajkowski said she was similarly “disgusted” by the space flight and Lily Allen called the mission “out of touch”, saying there was “no fucking reason” for it.
Last week, the ‘Firework’ singer on Tuesday shared a lengthy comment responding to the backlash. “Please know I am ok, I have done a lot of work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me,” she wrote. “When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.”
Katy Perry’s ‘Lifetime’ tour will begin its US leg of shows today (May 7) and will hit the UK and Europe later in the year – see the full list of dates and get tickets here.
As for Perry’s new album, NME gave ‘143’ a two-star review and described it as “a serviceable but slightly dull collection on which Perry struggles to relocate her old sense of fun”.
As for other Met Gala news, those in attendance included Rihanna – who used the appearance to confirm that she is pregnant with her third child – and Lorde, who dropped hints about her forthcoming album ‘Virgin’.
