The cast of MCU miniseries Ironheart are teasing the arrival of the supervillain Mephisto, but what do viewers need to know about the character? Find out below.
Created by Chinaka Hodge, the series picks up after events in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as genius inventor Riri Williams aka Ironheart returns to her hometown of Chicago and encounters the charming yet mysterious Parker Robbins aka The Hood.
Dominique Thorne returns in the titular role, alongside Anthony Ramos, Alden Ehrenreich, Lyric Ross, Matthew Elam, Anji White and Manny Montana.
The first three episodes of the series debuted on Disney+ on June 25, with the remaining three episodes set to arrive on July 2, 2025 in the UK.
In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Overall, Ironheart is a refreshing new antihero, with enough passion and swagger to overcome the more predictable elements of the plot. Some excellent cliffhangers mean there’s certainly more to come from this flawed genius, and that’s no bad thing.”
Who is Mephisto in Ironheart?
Fans of the MCU have been clamoring for the arrival of Mephisto for several years now. It was initially speculated that he would be part of WandaVision in 2021, or its spin-off Agatha All Along in 2024, but neither of those came to fruition.
The character, set to be played by Sacha Baron Cohen, is now expected to appear in the final three episodes of Ironheart, with the lead actors hinting as such in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Responding to a question about the appearance of “a new villain” in the show, Thorne said: “I don’t think [it’s the last that we’ll see him in the MCU]. I hope not. I hope it’s not the last time that we see him. But I do think it’s like the best boost of encouragement that you could get, when I did learn that he would be introduced in Ironheart. Because, of course, we know how much the fans, and how long the fans, have been waiting for that. For it to be in this show that they get him, let’s go.”
Ramos added: “And he’s one of the elite actors of our time, too. So that also helps.”
The rumour only seems to have been further confirmed by an early Telegraph review of the final episodes of Ironheart, in which they say Baron Cohen “steals the show” as a “pantomime villain version of that old favourite, the Devil, here going by one of their many noms d’evil, Mephisto”.
Mephisto is one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic villains. He was created by Stan Lee and John Buscema and first appeared in Silver Surfer #3 in 1968. A powerful, demonic entity who rules over his own dimension – known as Hell or Hades – he thrives on manipulating humans and making Faustian deals that have the power to trap or steal souls.
Now that he has finally arrived in the MCU, fans can expect Mephisto will be wreaking havoc again in future series and films.
