Chvrches have shared a new update with fans, confirming that they are working on a new album.

The band made the surprise announcement in a post on X/Twitter last night (July 1), posting a video of singer Lauren Mayberry and her bandmates all together.

In the footage, which is only around 10 seconds long, the singer told fans: “You can’t really see us but, Churches five in progress reveal! We’re working, we’ll see you soon”.

The comments allude to the highly anticipated fifth album from Chvrches, which is now underway and will mark the long-awaited follow-up to ‘Screen Violence’, which was shared back in 2021. The band completed their touring commitments in 2023, and have since been on a break.

News that their hiatus was over also came as the members teamed up and performed together for the first time in two years at a Death Stranding 2: On The Beach celebration event in the UK earlier this week.

Taking place on Monday (June 30), the trio reunited at the London leg of the Death Stranding 2 world celebration tour to perform their 2019 track ‘Death Stranding’, which was written for the first game. The gig also saw Caroline Polachek perform ‘On The Beach’ for the first time live.

While the Scottish synth-pop band haven’t released an album since 2021, they did play live up until 2023, and also supported Coldplay at Milan’s Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

In the time that they have been on a hiatus, Mayberry has turned her sights to another project, and dropped her debut solo LP ‘Vicious Creatures’ last December. Before then, she hinted that the band were working on album five when speaking to NME about going solo, shortly after the release of her first single as a solo act, ‘Are You Awake?’.

“It would be weird to be in any job for 12 years and not do anything else,” she said. “Four albums in a row is pretty solid, so it’s important to get new stuff into our brains. Then, as and when we come back for the fifth album, it has to be moving the conversation forward – it can’t just be a different version of the same thing.”

“After 10 years and four albums, this is a good time to take a minute,” she added. “Everyone go on your own adventure so when we come back we’re not just having the same musical conversations over and over.”

Mayberry’s solo album was given a three-star review from NME, which read: “It seems even Mayberry was caught off guard by these mixed impulses when she was ready to come out swinging, and that can leave things lagging when Chvrches have always charged ahead.

“But Mayberry is indeed on her own path of solo discovery, and that leaves plenty of room to be excited about what lies on the road ahead as she digs even deeper into her solo artistry.”

As well as that project, Mayberry also joined forces with IDLES‘ Joe Talbot on a rowdy new version of her track ‘Sorry, Etc, Etc’ in March, while bandmate Iain Cook shared a remix of The Cranberries’ 1993 track ‘Linger’ the summer before.

Before launching her solo career, Mayberry contributed guest vocals to the Death Cab For Cutie song ‘Northern Lights’, which featured on their 2018 album ‘Thank You For Today’.

She also collaborated with The National‘s Aaron Dessner on a cover of Frightened Rabbit‘s ‘Who’d Kill You Now?’ for ‘Tiny Changes’, a commemorative tribute album for the band’s late frontman Scott Hutchinson.
