Macaulay Culkin was sent ‘Rushmore’ script but never bothered to read it: “I probably could’ve done that one”

Macaulay Culkin shared his biggest career regret – missing out on the lead in Wes Anderson’s 1998 hit Rushmore.

In the early ‘90s, Culkin shot to fame thanks to the Home Alone movies, as well as box office smashes like My Girl and Ritchie Rich. The star then took a break from acting, disappearing from the business from 1994 to 2003.

Appearing on Hot Ones, he explained that during that period he “went to high school, I got married way too young, things like that”. Although he said he was still receiving and reading scripts, he said there was one that he left unread that he regretted.

“I was kind of voraciously reading through the scripts, but there was a couple that slipped through,” he recalled.

“And I remember about two years later, kinda clearing out the house and throwing out the old scripts, and I saw that the one that I didn’t read was Rushmore. And I was like, ‘Oh, dang. I probably could have done that one’”.

The 1998 comedy, about a precocious teenager named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) who falls for his teacher at the same time as his mentor (Bill Murray) was a critical and commercial hit, launching the careers of director Wes Anderson and star Schwartzman, as well as introducing audiences to a more serious side of comedy legend Murray.

While Culkin has regrets, he concedes the right actor got the part of Fischer. “I mean, I can’t imagine anyone but Schwartzman doing that part,” he said. “But at the same time — oh, man, that would have been a ball and a biscuit, that one”.

Macaulay Culkin will next be seen in Fallout season two. In January, he spoke about how he got emotional seeing his brother Keiran Culkin win an Oscar. In April, he discussed how he hasn’t spoken to his father in 30 years.
