Reform voters picked their fave sitcom – and obviously it was ‘Only Fools’

Only Fools And Horses

Long-running British sitcom Only Fools And Horses has been named the favourite comedy among Reform UK voters, according to a recent poll.

Running for seven series and numerous specials between 1981 and 2003, the show starred David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst as Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, brothers from Peckham in London who worked as market traders. Episodes often revolved around Del Boy’s plans to make money quickly, and the resulting calamity that followed.

Considered a national institution in Britain, the 1996 episode Time On Our Hands still holds the record for a UK sitcom audience, with 24.3million viewers tuning in. Repeats have also proved consistently popular on TV.

First reported by The Independent, the podcast The Rest Is Entertainment recently ran a poll where 2,000 people across the UK voted for their favourite sitcom from each decade, from the 1970s to 2000s. The winners from each era then competed against each other in a final round to decide the all-time favourite, with Only Fools being crowned the overall winner.

Sorting the voting statistics by stated political affiliation, Only Fools And Horses was the show with the most Reform UK voters’ support. The show was popular among Labour voters as well, who also turned out for The Young Ones; while Liberal Democrat voters most enjoyed Outnumbered and The Vicar Of Dibley enjoyed the majority of Conservative support.

Over time, the BBC sitcom has been criticised for its outdated views. In 2021, Only Fools became available on BritBox, which offered content warnings flagging certain episodes as having “offensive racial language”.

Despite the show’s success, David Jason said last year that he regrets that he is “only” recognised for playing Del Boy, as he would have liked other characters in his career to have been equally celebrated.

“That Derek Trotter thing, he’s a bit of a ghost that comes along behind me like A Christmas Carol” he told BBC Breakfast, adding: “I’m delighted in one way that it’s reached so many people and they’ve enjoyed what I’ve done with the character, but I’ve done so many other things that everybody seems to have forgotten about. It’s like I’ve only ever played Derek Trotter”.
