‘Grand Theft Auto’ fans are worried new game might not launch until 2027

'Grand Theft Auto 6' Liberty City tease.

Grand Theft Auto fans are worried that GTA 6 won’t actually launch until 2027 following another huge delay.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially announced in December 2023 with a launch window of 2025. However earlier this year, it was announced that the long-awaited follow-up to 2013’s GTA 5 would be delayed until May 26, 2026.

And last night, more than six months before the game was due to launch, Rockstar confirmed they needed to push the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 back even further. “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realise has been a long wait” they explained in a short statement. “But these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

Grand Theft Auto 6 will now release November 19, 2026.

However some fans believe the game won’t launch before 2027.

GTA 6 being delayed once again perhaps isn´t the biggest surprise ever, but the fact that it got delayed another 6 months is insane. I feel like it gets worse considering the fact that they had 6 months left to develop on the game, but now decide it apparently needs more polish. Makes you wonder if May 26 was ever gonna be a realistic release date to begin with…,” wrote one fan. “What a disappointment. I really hope they deliver, whenever it comes out. I’m setting my expectations to 2027 now,” said another.

Earlier this week, Rockstar fired 31 employees from its UK office for reportedly “leaking” insider information. However, it’s been claimed that they were actually fired for trying to unionise, and protests have been taking place outside the offices today (November 7). A report from an alleged Rockstar employee has claimed that a number of senior members of staff were among those that lost their jobs and their departure will affect their ability to “meet deadlines”, which has added to the doubts about Grand Theft Auto 6 making its new release date.

One person who seems sure the game won’t be delayed for a third time is Strauss Zelnick, boss of GTA publishers Take Two. In an interview with IGN, he said he was “highly confident” about the new launch date but has been wrong before

“There have been limited circumstances where more time was required to polish a title and make sure that it was spectacular and that time has been well-spent,” he added, defending the delay. “When our competitors go to market before something was ready, bad things happen.”

In other news, Marvel’s ambitious Captain America and Black Panther crossover Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra has been indefinitely delayed.
