Warner Bros. have announced that a third film in the Gremlins franchise will be released in cinemas in 2027.
The original film was released in 1984 and was a major hit, telling the story of a boy named Billy who receives a cute, furry creature called a Mogwai. After going back on warnings not to expose it to water, bright light or to feed it after midnight, the creature multiplies, unleashing chaos across his hometown during Christmas.
The film, directed by Joe Dante (Piranha, The ‘Burbs) and written by Harry Potter and Home Alone director Chris Columbus, spawned a sequel, 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which was less successful but became a cult favourite.
Now, it has been confirmed that a third film is on its way. In an investor call on Thursday (November 6), Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav announced that it would be released on November 19, 2027.
Steven Spielberg, who served as executive producer on the original, will return in the role, while Columbus will this time serve as director and producer. The screenplay will be written by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the team behind this year’s Final Destination Bloodlines.
Warner Bros. Pictures president of development and production Jesse Ehrman has said: “Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”
A third Gremlins film has been rumoured for many years, with Red Eye director Carl Ellsworth reportedly having been hired to write a script back in 2015. Zach Galligan, who played Billy in the 1984 original, was on board and said at the time that it would not be a reboot or remake, but that project appeared to go nowhere.
In 2017, Columbus said he had written a script for Gremlins 3 that he was “really proud” of, but once again, it would seem that this version of the film never materialised.
An animated TV prequel series Gremlins has aired for two seasons on HBO Max from 2023 to 2025, focusing on the early days of the young Gizmo in Shanghai.
