New Radicals’ Gregg Alexander responds to Geese’s ‘You Get What You Give’ cover: “Not just the coolest band in decades…they’re one of the best”

New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander has responded to Geese covering one of his tracks, and described them as “one of the best” bands around.

The comments come as the New York band made an appearance on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge series earlier this week. Shared on Tuesday (November 4), the slot saw them perform ‘100 Horses’, ‘Cobra’, before breaking into a unique cover of the New Radical’s classic track ‘You Get What You Give’.

For their rendition, they gave the song a one-of-a-kind rework, and swapped out the track’s lively sound for a solemn, more-experimental approach, which slowly builds to a cathartic and euphoric chorus.

Now, it seems that the cover hasn’t just impressed fans, it has also made its way over to New Radicals singer Gregg Alexander.

Sharing his thoughts on the cover, the frontman revealed that he came across it when dozens of people got in touch the next day and told him about it. He also went on to share his praise for the band, and describe them as one of “the best” bands he has come across in decades.

“Geese must truly be the coolest new band since The White Stripes, because my phone ain’t blown up like this since New Radicals announced reforming for just one day for the 2021 Presidential Inauguration in defiance of the raid on the Capitol,” he shared (via Stereogum).

“So I was confused at first by the dozens of texts I awoke to in Nashville Wednesday. Pals forwarding me headlines that there’s ‘Geese performing live’ on BBC ONE who are taking ‘You Get What You Give’ to artistic new heights?!”

“So I rushed on-line to discover Geese’s music,” he added. “And by the end of the first chorus of their instant classic ‘Taxes’, I realised they’re not just the coolest band in decades…they’re one of the best. What a lyric, ‘Doctor, heal yourself!…I will break my own heart’?!”.

This wasn’t the only time that Geese have turned heads by putting their signature spin on someone else’s track. Before taking on New Radials, the band covered The Velvet Underground and The Stooges at a gig in San Diego.

Before then they have brought their own style to ‘This Must Be The Place’ by Talking Heads, and ‘Escape (The Pina Colada Song)’ by Rupert Holmes.

In a glowing five-star review of their latest album ‘Getting Killed’, NME wrote: “There’s so much going on in this album that it feels like it would have been easy for the five-piece to lose sight of the bigger picture, yet for all its abrupt shifts and intricate details, ‘Getting Killed’ somehow doesn’t ever feel like there’s too much at play or like its creators aren’t in complete control.

“Instead, this is a band living up to their reputation as exhilaratingly free-spirited, not so much proving they deserve all the accolades and fervent fanaticism bubbling around them but demanding it.”

Before then, their record ‘3D Country’, appeared on NME‘s 50 best albums of 2023 list, where it was hailed for capturing “a sound far more expansive than most bands at this stage of their career”.

The former NME Cover stars recently announced a UK headline tour for 2026, which includes a stop at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town on March 26. Find any remaining tickets for the shows here.
