Bowen Yang dismisses hopes of a ‘Wicked 3’ film: “I think we leave it here”

It is looking highly unlikely that there will be a ‘Part three’ to the Wicked films, according to one of the actors.

Bowen Yang, who plays the role of Pfannee in both 2024’s Wicked film and the new second part, Wicked: For Good, shut down any hopes of the film series being extended into a trilogy in a new interview.

Part Two of the films, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, wraps up at the same point in the storyline that the original stage production does. When speaking to Variety for the outlet’s On the Carpet, Yang was asked if there were any plans to see the film series push the story further than the original timeline.

“I think we leave it here,” he told the outlet, before joking about how he would instead want to see a spin-off with his character and the character of ShenShen (played by Bronwyn James).

“I’m going to pitch a Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead story with my and Bronwyn James’ characters,” Yang quipped, making reference to the absurdist tragicomedy play by Tom Stoppard.

Director Jon M. Chu seemed to agree with Yang that there is little hope of a third part of the Wicked films too. When asked if there could be another film on the horizon, Chu said: “You know, there’s a lot of ideas flying around right now… We’ll see. Let’s enjoy this ride first.”

Wicked: For Good is due out in cinemas later this week (November 21).

In a four star review of the first film, NME wrote: “By the end, you won’t quite be levitating off your seat but you’ll definitely be enchanted enough to stream the soundtrack on the way home. Funny, colourful and full of empathy for outsiders, this film really is the Shiz.”

Last month, Chu teased that Wicked: For Good will feature a surprise Hollywood star in the role of the Cowardly Lion, joining the stacked cast that already includes Grande, Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

The name was not disclosed, but some fans suspect it could be either Lin-Manuel Miranda – who was eager to star in the first film – or Jack Black.

Last week, an incident took place during one of the red carpet events for the film, when a man crashed the premiere and rushed at Ariana Grande.

After jumping over the barricade, the man rushed towards Grande, wrapped his arms around her, and started jumping up and down before being pushed away by Erivo and security guards.

The person in question, an Australian prankster named Johnson Wen, has previously rushed at artists including Chainsmokers, Katy Perry, and The Weeknd gig in Melbourne, and has since been charged for public nuisance in a Singaporean court and given jail time.
