With the Mission: Impossible franchise heading towards its conclusion, Tom Cruise has assured fans he has no intention of leaving acting anytime soon.
On Sunday night (May 18), he confirmed the eighth film – Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – will be the last instalment in the franchise, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing.”
While speaking at the New York premiere, Cruise also revised a claim he’d made years earlier, when he said he’d like to emulate Harrison Ford and still be making films when he’s 80.
“Harrison Ford is a legend; I hope to be still going. I’ve got 20 years to catch up with him,” Cruise told The Sydney Morning Herald in 2023, referring to the legendary actor’s role in Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny. “I hope to keep making ‘Mission: Impossible’ films until I’m his age.”
“I’m going to make movies into my 100s. I’ll never stop. I’ll never stop doing action. I’ll never stop doing drama, comedy films.”

“I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s,” he said. “Actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s. I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I’m excited.”
Reflecting on spending nearly three decades working on the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise continued to say he couldn’t single out one most rewarding moment, because “there’s been so many levels of reward with the filmmakers that I’ve collaborated with, the crews, the people, the cultures that we’ve worked in.
“Everything that I’ve learned and continue to learn about storytelling, about life, about leadership, about character and every aspect of filmmaking. It’s been exceptional, it really is exceptional. I feel very fortunate to be able to make the films that I make and I love it, I just making movies.”
As for the stunts in the film, which earned him a five-minute standing ovation upon its premiere at Cannes, he shared he had ” a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive”, explaining that “a lot of thought goes into it, and they are very complex and very interesting.”
After Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise will star in an untitled film from The Revenant and Birdman director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
The film, which is set to be released on October 2, 2026, will also star Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D’Arcy.
