Donald Trump, Meryl Streep, and Stephen King are among those to have paid tribute to screen icon Robert Redford, who has died aged 89.

The news was confirmed today (Tuesday September 16) in a statement by Cindi Berger, the chief executive of the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK.

She said that the legendary actor, best recognised for his role alongside Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, died in his sleep at his home in Utah. A cause of death has not been announced, but the statement did share that the film star was “surrounded by those he loved” at the time of passing.

Other hit films he featured in included the 1973 classic The Sting, as well as 1975’s Three Days Of The Condor and the 1976 hit All The President’s Men.

Outside of his time acting, he made his debut as a director with 1980’s Ordinary People, which went on to bag four Academy Awards, including wins for Best Director and Best Picture. He also founded the Sundance Film Festival, which is now the largest festival for independent film in the United States.

Countless tributes have been shared online following Redford’s death, including from president Donald Trump who shared his admiration for the actor. “I’ll tell you, Robert Redford was great,” Trump said before boarding his flight for his state visit to the UK. “He had a series of years where there was nobody better… There was a period of time when he was the hottest. I thought he was great.”

The Independent highlighted how Redford had been strongly critical of the president, previously comparing him to a dictator and writing in a column that “our essential freedom of the press and our precious freedoms of speech – all have been threatened by a single man.”

Other tributes have come from famed horror writer Stephen King, who took to X/Twitter to praise the star as “part of a new and exciting Hollywood in the ‘70s and ‘80s”, and from Emmy-winner Colman Domingo, who wrote: “With love and admiration. Thank you Mr. Redford for your everlasting impact. Will be felt for generations.”

Marlee Matlin, who starred alongside in the multi-Oscar-winning 2021 film CODA, wrote: “Our film, CODA, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert.”

Meryl Streep also paid her respects to the late actor, sharing a statement that read: “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.” Both Streep and Redford worked together in the drama Out Of Africa, which was shared in 1985.

Acclaimed film director Ron Howard took to X to describe the Hollywood star as a “tremendously influential cultural figure for the creative choices made as an actor/producer/director”, and praised him for advancing the independent film industry with the creation of Sundance.
