Some Grand Theft Auto fans have been tricked by a viral social media post that claimed a movie adaptation was in the works.
Yesterday (November 5) parody film news account DiscussingFish claimed a Grand Theft Auto film was in the works at Paramount.
“It will be an original story set in the universe with game-accurate locations & production design. In theatres October 22, 2028,” the post continued, alongside a link to a different news story on IGN.
The post quickly racked up more than 600,000 views and was shared thousands of times. “We’re getting a GTA movie before GTA 6,” wrote one fan. “Adapting Grand Theft Auto to a film seems kind of pointless. GTA is amazing because of its interactivity so I don’t see how a movie could be good,” said another. “I wonder how many times this will be delayed,” added a third.
However, there’s absolutely nothing to back up DiscussingFish’s fake news story. “Damn, I really wanted to believe it until I saw the name…,” wrote one fan. “The amount of people thinking this is real is concerning,” said another.
the fucking sigh in relief when i noticed it was the parody account tweeting this lmao https://t.co/lGmKZmDGPI

Last year, Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former head writer Dan Houser claimed that the team were always against the idea of a movie adaptation of Grand Theft Auto. “We had what we considered to be multi billion dollar IP, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. In those days, the perception was that games made poor-quality movies,” he explained (via IGN).
In 2022, it was reported that Rockstar Games had previously turned down the opportunity to create a Grand Theft Auto film with Eminem.
Earlier this week, Houser claimed Grand Theft Auto London would never happen, despite several fan-made projects. “There is so much Americana inherent in the IP, it would be really hard to make it work in London or anywhere else. You know, you needed guns, you needed these larger-than-life characters,” he explained.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is due to launch May 26, 2026 and, according to the boss of publishers Take Two, will not be delayed again. Fans are also expecting Trailer 3 to be released at some point this month.
In other news the director of 2006’s Saints Row, Chris Stockman, is currently working on a prequel.
