Sydney Sweeney’s performance in the film Christy has been condemned by Ruby Rose, who accused the star of having no connection to the character.

The biopic tells the story of boxing champion Christy Martin, and became one of the biggest flops of all time on its opening weekend, making just $1.305million (£994,605) from 2,011 cinemas – a per-theatre average of $649 (£495).

Despite the failure, Sweeney took to Instagram to defend the movie. “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded” she wrote. “So yes I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”

Seemingly in response to the post, Rose – known for her roles in the John Wick and Pitch Perfect movies as well as TV show Orange Is The New Blackposted on Threads to share her view on the performance.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry” she wrote, using the boxer’s nickname. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

Christy Martin identifies as lesbian and has been married to a woman since 2017, with her previous female relationships portrayed in the film. Rose, a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community, accused Sweeney of not being connected to this aspect of the character.

“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’” she continued. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

For much of the summer, Sydney Sweeney was embroiled in controversy over her appearance in an advert for American Eagle Jeans, which was accused of promoting eugenics by social media users. The actor recently spoke out on the controversy for the first time, saying: “I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think.”
