System Of A Down’s John Dolmayan says President Trump “brings a little sanity back” to US

System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan has said President Donald Trump has brought “a little sanity back” to the United States.

The musician has been a longstanding and outspoken supporter of Trump since his first campaign for the White House in 2016, prompting tension within the band as frontman Serj Tankian, who is also his brother-in-law, has been a staunch Trump critic, even calling for his resignation at one point.

Now, Dolmayan has given an interview with YouTuber Lilian Tahmasian in which he said he voted for Trump again in 2024 and was “glad” that he was victorious.

“It brings a little sanity back,” he said (via Blabbermouth). “Irrespective of what you hear out there, it’s much more sane with him than it was without him. We need law and order. Just like you lock your door at night, you don’t want somebody coming to your house when you have secure borders.”

When challenged, he added: “We need people coming to this country. We all came to this country. And we need more people coming in. And the United States should always be a bastion for people that need it. Maybe they get oppression one way or the other in their countries and they need to leave. Or maybe they just want a fresh start. Or maybe they wanna be part of something that’s unique and interesting like the United States. And they should be allowed to do that, but do it a certain way – pay taxes, whatever you need to do, and live your life.”

“I don’t believe in the ‘woke’ culture at all,” he continued. “It’s no secret what my belief system is. And I also don’t think having lifelong career politicians is good for society.”

When asked how it has affected his relationship with Tankian, he said: “Yeah, well, we had problems with that, because Serj is very outspoken. And he has one way of thinking. Some things we agree with — the rest of the band — some things we don’t. Some things we’re exactly on par with. My belief system is a little different.”

In the past, Dalmayan has drawn ire for saying Black Lives Matter “never had legitimacy” and was a “propaganda tool” for the Democrat Party, and for arguing that the COVID-19 pandemic “has always been about money”.

Dolmayan has also been critical of fans who have taken issue with his political views. “If I simply kept my mouth shut as some of you would prefer there would be one less voice speaking against the willful destruction and hate that is consuming so many people, hate and anger that will only bring a stronger and more violent reaction from opposing ideals. This helps no one,” he said in 2020.

Last December, System Of A Down announced their longest stretch of tour dates in years, as they head to South America in April and May, and North America in August and September. The dates – all of which are sold out – will mark the first time since 2017 that the band will perform more than occasional one-off shows.

The group haven’t put out an album since their two 2005 releases ‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’, and speaking with Metal Hammer last year, Tankian revealed he “became very passive” during the writing and recording process for those. Bassist Shavo Odadjian has described hopes for new music as being “slim”.
