Fans are worried about Amazon’s ‘God Of War’ adaptation after showrunner admits he’s “not a gamer”

‘God of War’ patch improves performance and stability on PC

Fans are already worried about Amazon Prime Video’s God Of War adaptation after showrunner Ronald D. Moore admitted he is “not a gamer”.

An adaptation of God Of War was announced by Amazon back in 2022, with the series set to take heavy inspiration from the 2018 game. According to reports, the show was set to follow retired God Of War Kratos as he heads out to spread his wife’s ashes from the highest peak in the land, alongside his estranged son Atreus. However things don’t go according to plan and Kratos soon has to pick his sword back up.

At the end of last year, it was reported Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM studios were rebooting the adaptation after showrunner Rafe Judkins left the project after completing several scripts. The split was down to a difference in “creative direction”.

Now Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek) has confirmed he’s the new showrunner for the God Of War adaptation, with Amazon ordering two seasons of the show. “Right now I’m working on an adaptation of the video game God Of War. It’s a big title in the gaming world. Two seasons, and they’ve asked me to come in, so I’m in the writer’s room, working on that,” Moore said in a new interview with Katee Sackhoff.

He went on to say it’s a daunting project because “I’m not a gamer. I’ve never done this before.”

Moore said he’s “taken a stab” at playing the game but because he “grew up in the arcade era”, modern controllers are too complex.

“My kids do it like it’s nothing, my wife plays Skyrim and has done for probably 15 years. Give me Asteroids or Defender.” After disappointing adaptations of beloved games such as Halo, some fans are now worried about Moore’s take on God Of War.

“Greeeaaaaat, a non-gamer trying to adapt games to screen. What could possibly go wrong…,” wrote one fan. “Can we fucking not ruin another franchise,” added another. “Let me guess, the writers will decide to deviate from the story in the games and it will be awful,” said a third.

“If Amazon shows have taught me anything, it’s to set expectations as low as possible,” wrote one fan, while others are more optimistic. “The counterpoint here is that Ronald D. Moore is the one developing it. If this show is bad it would be a career first for him,” wrote a fan. “I’m hoping it goes the Fallout route and is actually great,” said another.

Earlier this year it was reported a new God Of War game could be in the works and, after exploring Norse and Greek mythology, this new title would be set in ancient Egypt.

In other news, it looks like Starfield could be coming to the PlayStation 5 after the logo was spotted on the sci-fi game’s website.
